Fondecyt 1150296: Trabajo en terreno y laboratorio durante enero 2016 / Field and lab work during January 2016

Estas semanas ha sido de arduo trabajo en terreno tanto para la recolección de muestras de ictioplancton, como la instalación de trampas de luz en la zona costera de Montemar, norte de Bahía Valparaíso, Chile central.
During the past weeks, hard field work has been carried out for collecting ichthyoplankton samples (with Bongo nets) as well as light trap installations in nearshore waters from Montemar, north Bahía Valparaíso, central Chile.

 

Nuevo registro de Notocheirus hubbsi en Chile central / New register of Notocheiron hubbsi in central Chile

Durante el desarrollo del proyecto Fondecyt 1150296, y en interior de las muestras recolectadas en enero 2016 con trampas de luz en Bahía El Quisco, apareció un adulto de Notocheirus hubbsi Clark (familia Notocheiridae). Esta especie habita las aguas costeras de Chile y Argentina. La identificación fue realizada por el biólogo marino Pablo Reyes, de la Fundación Ictiológica.

During the development of the Project Fondecyt 1150296, in a sample collected during January 2016 with light traps at El Quisco Bay, we found a surf silverside Notocheirus hubbsi Clark (family Notocheiridae). This species inhabit coastal waters of Chile and Argentina. Identification  was carried out by the marine biologist Pablo Reyes, from Fundación Ictiológica.

LABITI participa en la XI Reunión de Ictiología de Chile / LABITI participates at the XI Chilean Ichthyology Reunion

La jornada del jueves 21 de enero 2016 estuvo marcada por un emotivo recuerdo del Dr. Roberto Meléndez. En esta nueva reunión, organizada por la Universidad de Concepción, Concepción, Chile, el Laboratorio de Ictioplancton (LABITI) participó en 3 exposiciones orales.

During the XI Chilean Ichthyology Reunión, on Thusday 21 January 2016, we remember the late Dr. Roberto Meléndez, prominent Chilean ichthyologist. This new reunión was held at Universidad de Concepción, Concepción, Chile, and the Laboratorio de Ictioplancton (LABITI) participates in three oral expositions.

Valentina Nowajewski expuso el trabajo "Crecimiento y mortalidad larval del tramboyo, Auchenionchus crinitus (Labrisomidae) inferida por microestructura de otolitos durante invierno de 2014 en una zona costera de Antofagasta, norte de Chile", que es parte de su tesis de biología marina.

 

Valentina Nowajewski make a lecture entitled "Larval growth and mortality of labrisomid blenny Auchenionchus crinitus (Labrisomidae) inferred by otolith microstructure, during austral Winter 2014 in a coastal zone off Antofagasta, northern Chile" which is part of her graduate thesis.

 

 

Gissella Castillo-Hidalgo presentó el trabajo "Heterogeneidad ambiental de la columna de agua en la XI Región sur y su efecto en el ictioplancton marino de la Patagonia Chilena", que corresponde a resultados del proyecto CIMAR 20F 14-09.

 

Gissella Castillo-Hidalgo presented the work "Environmental heterogeneity of the water column at the XI south Region, and their effect on the marine ichthyoplankton of the Chilean Patagonia", which is part of the results of the Project CIMAR 20F 14-09.

 

 

María José Ochoa participó con el trabajo titulado "Distribución y estrategias de alimentación de larvas de Auxis spp. y su relación con remolinos de mesoescala en el Golfo de California", que formó parte de su tesis de Maestría en el CICIMAR, México.

 

María José Ochoa participates with the oral exposition "Distribution and feeding strategy of Auxis spp. larvae and its relation with eddies in the Gulf of California", which is part of her Master thesis at CICIMAR, Mexico.



 

Con el team LABITI + Francisca Osorio, estudiante de biología marina de la Universidad de Valparaíso, galardonada con el premio al mejor trabajo de pregrado en Ictiología 2016.

 

With the LABITI team plus Francisca Osorio, marine biology graduate student at the Universidad de Valparaíso, which obtained the best exposition at the graduate level in Ichthyology 2016.

 

 

 

Fondecyt 1150296: ¿pueden los ciclos lunares afectar la dieta larval de pejesapo? / Could the lunar cycle affect the feeding habits of larval clingfish?

Esta pregunta será desarrollada y analizada en el transcurso del Seminario de Investigación y posterior Tesis de Biólogo Marino de la Srta. Juanita de Los Ríos. Para ello Juanita ha comenzado a fotografiar larvas del pejesapo Gobiesox marmoratus capturados en distantes fases del ciclo lunar entre septiembre de 2015 y febrero de 2016. Posteriormente a las mediciones de longitud larval y tamaño del hocico, comenzará con el análisis de contenido estomacal, para poner a prueba la hipótesis planteada inicialmente por el Dr. Santiago Hernández-León (2008), de que la luna llena favorecería el éxito alimentario y alimentación de larvas de peces.

This question will be developed and analysed throughout the Research Seminar and Graduate Thesis of Miss Juanita de Los Ríos, student of Marine Biology at Universidad de Valparaíso (Chile). She today started the photography captures of larval clingfish Gobiesox marmoratus collected at different lunar phases between September 2015 and February 2016. After that body measurements (standard length and mouth size), she will start the gut content analysis, in order to test the hypothesis initially postulated by Dr. Santiago Hernández-León (2008), in which the full moon may favor the feeding success of marine fish larvae.

Hoy nos volvimos a meter a las frías aguas del litoral central de Chile, a realizar filmaciones subacuáticas y captura de postlarvas (o preasentados) de trombollito de tres aletas Helcogrammoides chilensis (Tripterygiidae).

Today we take a trip to the cold waters of central Chile, to make video recordings and collection of presettlement larvae of triplefin Helcogrammoides chilensis (Tripterygiidae).

En enero de 2016 iniciamos la temporada de estudio sobre conducta y edad de agregaciones de preasentados de trombollito Helcogrammoides chilensis y H. cunninghami, donde diariamente Antonia Reculé, Victor Molina y Bastián Fernandez, estudiantes de Biología Marina realizan filmaciones con cámaras GoPro.
In January 2016 we started the season of study about in situ behavior and age estimation of presettlement schoolings of triplefin Helcogrammoides chilensis and H. cunninghami. Daily (from monday to friday), three undergraduate students, Antonia Reculé, Victor Molina and Bastián Fernández, made underwater filming by using GoPro cameras.

Durante la primera semana de enero de 2016 continuamos con los muestreos en dos localidades de Chile central, El Quisco y Montemar.
During the first week of January 2016, we continue with the plankton sampling at two locations of central Chile, El Quisco and Montemar.

En las trampas de luz instaladas en Montemar, se logró recolectar preasentados de borrachilla Scartichthys viridis, baunco Girella laevifrons, juveniles de pejerrey Odontesthes regia y sardina Strangomera bentincki.  
In the light traps installed at Montemar, were collected presettlement stages of blenny Scartichthys viridis, sea chub Girella laevifrons, juveniles of Odontesthes regia and sardine Strangomera bentincki.
